If you want to learn this language, you’ll find there really great tutorials for it (just be careful — Objective-C was/is evolving too).

Note: Due to the popularity of this article, we’re leaving this section “as is.” As we’ve since written about on this site since February 2015 though, we no longer consider there to be an “Android tax.” The two major platforms are now very comparable overall. We still typically advocate to start with one platform first—especially for startups—as we explain in our article on the subject.

It all started when my sister-in-law, Hannah, heard I was looking for a project to learn to develop for the iPad. She was working with an autistic boy using one of these clunky medical devices and suggested I build a replacement on the iPad. I’ve spent a lot of time designing software, but have never been a programmer. I focused on the user interface and experience which is where I could add the most value. With the help of some talented friends I set out to create OneVoice. The rest of the story is here: One Year With iOS and The Story Behind OneVoice.

Ry’s Objective-C tutorial — for “oldschool” Objective-C fans. You don’t have to truly master Objective-C (Swift is the future ), but it’s good to know the basics and to be able to read the code written in this language.

This didn’t really help much either.  First of – the way I set up the group folders meant that there was no Git support which I need.  Of course, I could have added this myself but I wasn’t sure if I could actually integrate with Xcode in this way.  Things were already starting to get to complicated.

Hiring professional developers to build apps can be expensive (prices typically start from around up). But if you have an interesting enough project it can be worth teaming up with a developer who wants to hone their skills.

Another key feature of ObjC is its use of protocols, known in most modern languages as interfaces. Protocols promise that a particular class implements a set of methods, meaning that other objects in the system can call those methods on any object supporting that protocol. This is often used in modern OO languages as a substitute for multiple inheritance, although the feature sets are not entirely similar. A common example of a protocol in Cocoa is the NSCopying protocol, which defines one method, copyWithZone, that implements deep copying on objects.[44]

In your first ten minutes using an iPad, you’ll have used most, if not all, of the iPad only user interface elements and because they’re done by Apple, you probably didn’t think much about using them, they just seemed natural. While as users, we don’t really want to be too conscious about them. As developers, we need to make sure we know what these new elements are called in each circumstance, so we can use the right one. Now the most significant new user interface idea that’s only for the iPad, is the split view. Typically used when you have, nested data or some kind of master detail relationship. If you’re in the settings application, on the iPhone, you’re used to going left an right through multiple screens. But here on the iPad it’s all on the same screen. You select from the list on the left. And the area on the right, the detail page changes to handle your selection, but itself handles a navigation controller so you can drill down to multiple screens. You’ll see this in…
