( iPhone + iPad )- This is one of the most popular video editing apps for iOS devices. Apple’s iMovie lets you easily create and edit HD videos on your iPhone and iPad. You can also make Hollywood style movie trailers with this app. Created videos with iMovie can be published to Facebook, YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo, directly from the app. You can also save videos in full resolution and share them using AirDrop or stream videos using AirPlay.
The same approach hasn’t worked nearly as well on Apple’s desktops and laptops. The Mac App Store is a ghost town of limited selection and rarely updated programs. Now Apple plans to change that by giving people a way to use a single set of apps that work equally well across its family of devices: iPhones, iPads and Macs.
To develop iOS apps using the latest technologies described in these lessons, you need a Mac computer (macOS 10.11.5 or later) running the latest version of Xcode. Xcode includes all the features you need to design, develop, and debug an app. Xcode also contains the iOS SDK, which extends Xcode to include the tools, compilers, and frameworks you need specifically for iOS development.
(Interestingly, the app I in mind needs too much screen real estate to run on an iPhone, but the iPad is really too big for it – the book made me realize that I need to rethink the design completely.)
That guidance was provided back in 2010. Since that time, “How much does it cost to build an app?” has been the most common question I’ve received from prospective customers. To say I’ve heard it thousands of times might be an understatement. With five years behind us and a whole new app landscape, I felt it was time to revisit this epic question again.

Consider Freddie Anne Hodges, 12, who was “obsessed” with two things — how tall she was getting and her iPhone. She decided to put the two together and, within a matter of a few months, she created an iPhone application called “Measure Me” that quickly sold several hundred copies. (Unlike the book crooks, who hacked accounts to boost their iPhone app sales before they got booted from the iTunes store, Hodges sales are legitimate.)
Appy Pie’s iOS iPad App builder offers you various premium features to keep your app users engaged with your application. The book starts at the beginning – how to use the tools that Apple provides in the SDK, and then goes on to explore some of the finer points of Objective-C and Cocoa Touch, before exploring the full process of creating an app. Well written, easy to follow, and very informative!
0:34. Let’s go over some stats before we get into how to make an iPad app, because most people don’t understand how it’s possible to create a free iPad app and generate a significant daily and monthly income. How are you able to make money when the app is free?
Swift uses Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) to manage memory. Apple used to require manual memory management in Objective-C, but introduced ARC in 2011 to allow for easier memory allocation and deallocation. One problem with ARC is the possibility of creating a strong reference cycle, where objects reference each other in a way that you can reach the object you started from by following references (e.g. A references B, B references A). This causes them to become leaked into memory as they are never released. Swift provides the keywords weak and unowned to prevent strong reference cycles. Typically a parent-child relationship would use a strong reference while a child-parent would use either weak reference, where parents and children can be unrelated, or unowned where a child always has a parent, but parent may not have a child. Weak references must be optional variables, since they can change and become nil.

If you love programming languages, you will love Objective-C. If you don’t know how to program, this is the part that can get pretty sticky, so you might want to find a programmer friend or hire someone. It really does help to get a book, too, for reference.

The book does a reasonable job teaching experienced software developers how to create their first iphone application. The sample app in the book exercises many of the different user interface items we see in iphone apps. The code is written in Objective-C, which took a while to understand even with 20 years of C++ experience. My son, who has no software development experience, became too frustrated with understanding the code examples to finish reading the book. Calling this a “for Dummies” book is a stretch.
