Granted, there are a couple of corners that you could cut for reducing development costs. You could be a rogue developer and rely solely on the iPhone SDK iPhone Simulator for your app testing. You could harvest the extensive library of Apple sample apps for your code. You could just “blow on your arm” for your app content. Even after all of these cost-saving efforts, however, you are still going to need an Intel-based Mac and a subscription to the Apple iPhone Developer Program.

A key feature of ObjC is its support for categories, methods that can be added to extend classes at runtime. Categories allow extending classes in-place to add new functions with no need to subclass or even have access to the original source code. An example might be to add spell checker support to the base NSString class, which means all instances of in the application gain spell checking. The system is also widely used as an organizational technique, allowing related code to be gathered into library-like extensions. Swift continues to support this concept, although they are now termed extensions, and declared with the keyword extension. Unlike ObjC, Swift can also add new properties accessors, types and enums to extant instances.

Build the app. Click the Build button, which looks like a traditional Play button, to compile the app and run it. Building the app may take a few minutes. you can watch the progress in the toolbar. Once the build process is complete, the iOS Simulator will open and you can begin testing your app.

Our designers are well-versed with the flat design convention that is symbolic of iOS and other Apple devices. We have worked extensively with flat design, making apps for iOS 7, iOS 8, iOS 9 and now iOS 10.

0:34. Let’s go over some stats before we get into how to make an iPad app, because most people don’t understand how it’s possible to create a free iPad app and generate a significant daily and monthly income. How are you able to make money when the app is free?

Coders will often be tasked with solving the same or similar problems when making software.  Since most people don’t want to code or copy the same thing over and over again we try to come up with ways of organizing code so that we can avoid repetition.  Instead of writing a few lines of code we will encapsulate that same code in a function that we can reuse over and over again.  Write once and use forever.

Building the Fun Facts app will teach you how to use the Objective-C language and the Xcode and Interface Builder tools. You will also learn about core concepts such as views and view controllers, creating a data model, and the Model-View-Controller design pattern. Towards the end you will have finished creating a fun app that will get you oriented with the world of iOS development.

At the same time, the Mac is still out there. For things that simply can’t be done on the iPad, developers could open up their project on the Mac. At least at the outset, Xcode for iPad won’t be a complete replacement for its Mac cousin, and nearly all developers will still have a Mac to work with.

There are advertising networks catered for mobile that offer a variety of models and formats within the in-app advertising strategy as well as metrics to keep track of how the ads are performing. Hongkiat runs through some of the big networks here, including Google’s AdMob and Millennial Media.

Review : I tried a few Udemy courses but just was not feeling the ‘vibe’, it still seemed so hard. Then – I just decided to try again because I am stupid that way. I found Aaron’s course and FOR THE FIRT TIME, this gibberish is starting to make sense. The code actually works on my end and it really is an empowering feeling. Just today, October 9th _ I sent Aaron a financial bonus because he was frankly ‘an answer to my prayers’ and I just wanted to show my gratitude. Aaron also responds quickly which is just very, very cool.

While the camera on an iPhone and iPad is certainly good enough for most consumer video needs, its feature set and capabilities aren’t exactly on par with most capable video cameras. There are, however, several apps available that adds functions like digital zoom, stabilization and other lens effects while you shoot. Of the apps I reviewed, Top Camera was my favorite.

The instructor does an excellent job explaining the language in a way that is both beneficial for newer programmers and very experienced programmers. He does not waste time at all repeating the basics, but he still lays down the fundamentals

Swift also has limited support for attributes, metadata that is read by the development environment, and is not necessarily part of the compiled code. Like Objective-C, attributes use the @ syntax, but the currently available set is small. One example is the @IBOutlet attribute, which marks a given value in the code as an outlet, available for use within Interface Builder (IB). An outlet is a device that binds the value of the on-screen display to an object in code.

I just got my first app out and approved. There is no question it was well worth the $99, and It’s already doing a huge deal to support my business. I am pleased with the support we get from apple, and the system they put in place to help my company become successful. This is all stuff independent developers couldn’t even dream of 5 years ago.

Standardized UI is preferred to give uniformity to the applications. This brings out the unmatched user experience for its users which makes them loyal towards it as they do not have to compromise on aesthetics and functionality at the same time.

Look at your laptop. Now look at your iPad. What’s missing? A keyboard! If you intend to truly Get Things Done, you’re going to want one. The moment you attach a true typing accessory to your tablet is the moment working on your tablet starts feeling normal. The Logitech Create keyboard case is the best. If you’re into clackier keys, try Razer’s case. Want something that doesn’t attach to your tablet? Apple’s Magic Keyboard is tough to beat. All are better than Apple’s smushy Smart Keyboard.

Two of Swift’s most novel features over Objective-C are the extended power of enumerations and the language features to deal with nil values. In this course we’re going to start by exploring enumerations in Swift – how they can define a set of related values, how they can carry associated values and how they make our code much safer by bringing in some wonderful compiler support. After that we take a look at optionals and dealing with nil values. Working with optionals can get pretty confusing so we understand why we do this in the first place and how we can unwrap the values when we need them.

Unit testing allows you to test your application for logic errors, prevent crashes, and even write better code. In this course, we cover the philosophy behind unit testing, ways we can structure our code to make it more testable and look at tools we can use to test our code. We’ll look at both tools that come built in, like the XCTest Framework in Xcode, as well as a few third party solutions for both Objective-C and Swift.

A class is a definition of an entity (an abstract model) that is made up of definitions for properties and methods. By itself, a class doesn’t do much other than contain a definition. In the above example all the code that defines the class is between the @interface and @end keywords and the @implementation and @end keywords.

This move toward open, free information is particularly surprising coming from Apple. The tight-lipped corporation is especially peculiar about guarding its secrets, and its products are designed under a restricted, closed platform. However, as Apple continues to expand its product line and partnerships, the corporation has recently been forced to open up — just a peep.

iOS SDK is the Interface Builder, which eliminates the need to write a lot of custom code. It helps put together the user interface using pre-configured objects so the developer doesn’t have to create everything from scratch. Since it is a visual interface, the developer can see how the interface will look like to a user and make changes accordingly.

While there are no prerequisites, prior experience with any other programming language will be helpful. If this is your first time learning a programming language, you will need to devote a few hours each week outside of class to practice. You’ll also need a Mac (running either OS X Mavericks Yosemite), in order to run the programs you’ll be using to complete your coursework.

The work doesn’t finish once you’ve made it onto App Store. As it’s unlikely you’ll have your own in-house QA department, some bugs and design issues may only surface when hundreds of gamers get their hands on the code. Consequently, it may be necessary to submit several alterations.

But if you’ve ever handed an educational math app over to your kid, only to come back and find them playing Need for Speed, then you may want to give Guided Access a try. If you can’t see our video tutorial above, try this direct link.

This couple’s idea (like mine) was to release a new app each month. What they found is diminishing returns and basically had to work twice as hard to make half as much on each successive app. BTW: the $200,000 figure includes their 401K and house equity.

Now, when you have your shiny new (cleaned used is very close to the new too) Mac on your desk, it’s time to install the most important software for iOS developer — Xcode. Xcode is your IDE (integrated development environment) for making iOS apps. It’s free and you can download it straight from the Mac App Store, which you should do right now.

One of the most fundamental types of apps you can create is one with a hierarchical data model and style of navigation. In this course we’re going to learn exactly how to do that by building an interactive story app. We’ll cover a lot of ground by exploring navigation controllers, hierarchical data models and custom view controllers. We’ll go over how to accept user input, how to create and layout views programmatically, how to play sound effects and much more. At the end of this course, you will have the knowledge to build many of the basic apps you see in the app store.

It’s worth using a site like Meetup to find where coders are meeting up in your area, and then heading over to say hello. You can also use a service like LinkedIn to find developers, although this is more useful if you have financial backing for your project.

Your points can be redeemed as hard currency through your Paypal account or as credits for other services such as buying other apps, Amazon and Starbucks gifts cards. The sky is pretty much the limit here.

“Stanford is very interested in not just creating knowledge but in sharing that knowledge with anyone who seeks it,” said Brent Izutsu, product manager of Stanford’s iTunes U program. “I think there definitely is a little modification at Apple, at least within the education realm, to open up a little bit.”

Under the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch environments, many common classes were part of the Foundation Kit library. This included the NSString string library (using Unicode), the NSArray and NSDictionary collection classes, and others. Objective-C provided various bits of syntactic sugar to allow some of these objects to be created on-the-fly within the language, but once created, the objects were manipulated with object calls. For instance, in Objective-C concatenating two NSStrings required method calls similar to this:

Assign your Storyboard to your project. Once you create the Storyboard, you will need to assign it as the main interface of your app. This will load the Storyboard when the app is launched. If you don’t assign the storyboard, nothing will happen when you start the app up.

The first 140 pages or so are all about why the iPad and the iOS is so cool. If I bought this book I already think it’s cool. I felt like I wasted a lot of time reading the first part. After that it gets into actual meat and potatoes; the programming and design in Xcode. It makes a few assumptions (probably rightfully so) that the reader has a good understanding already of Objective-C and Object Oriented Programming concepts. If you don’t have a good grasp on those two topics first then you should get Objective-C for Dummies and establish a strong understanding of OOP. After that it seems to move pretty quickly. I’ll admit I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I did Objective-C for Dummies. I’ll likely use this book as a reference for anything I need to do for the most part. All in all, it’s a good book; worth the money.

In June 2015, Apple announced Swift 2.0 – the latest version of their brand new programming language. We’ve been working with Swift 1.2 so far and in this video we’re going to take a look at what’s new in the language and the changes we need to make to our code.

Building an iPhone app from start to finish, this book explains the dev environment, language, app design and app management process, while simultaneously managing to discusses the pros and cons of various tradeoffs you need to make an app. I am impressed at its conciseness and the conveyed depth of understanding of what it takes to get a robust, shipping product. The specific information about using the command line versions of various Xcode tools is something that I haven’t seen elsewhere and am finding it extremely helpful.

Hire a developer: If you’re a computer programmer, or just somebody who doesn’t mind tinkering with tech until you get it right, you can probably build your own application, following Apple’s detailed developer guidelines. But you don’t have to be technosavvy, if you’re willing to hire someone who is.

Objective C and C will likely still be the most optimal programming language for anything requiring high performance and the latest API support (* see update below), as those are the languages for which Apple targets its iOS frameworks and tunes its ARM processor chipsets. Apple also supports the use of Javascript/HTML5 inside a UIWebView. Those are the only languages for which Apple has announced support. Anything else you will have to find support elsewhere.

ObjC was weakly typed, and allowed any method to be called on any object at any time. If the method call failed, there was a default handler in the runtime that returned nil. That meant that no unwrapping or testing needed, the equivalent statement in ObjC:
