“Apple provides the free SDK for iPhone development from their Developer site,” explains Stuart Varrall, Creative Director at Fluid Pixel. “This includes everything you need to get going, including the development environment Xcode, the iPhone Simulator for testing, performance analysers, interface builders and the full documentation reference library.”
These industry experts also wrote great reviews in the App Store which I think made a big sales difference. Now the policies have changed so users who downloaded the app with a promo code cannot write a review. I’ve never been featured or had any promotion from Apple. So all of the numbers below are from my marketing efforts outside the App Store.
I clicked through, and I wasn’t disappointed: not only did the GitHub page include the exact same content as the iTunes U course, but it looked better and included the missing Xcode project downloads — plus Keynote files for class lectures on various design concepts.
Communication, education, entertainment, health, finance – these are just a few of the areas in our modern lives that we use apps to manage. Apps allow professionals in all fields to bring useful tools to those who need them most, to distribute big ideas to millions of people, or simply to express themselves creatively.
Without an app, a PC is a typewriter, and a smartphone or tablet is a slab of glass and metal. If you’ve been bitten by the app bug and hanker to make your own, getting started can be intimidating. This feature points you at tutorials, explainers, resources, and videos that can help you learn how to make an app.
In this course, you will build a simple app that models a vending machine in the real world. The aim of the course is to understand errors in our code and how we handle situations that are unexpected or incorrect. In addition, we will take a look at how to use stock controls in iOS and understand how views are arranged in an app. Towards the end you should have a good grasp on how to create and respond to your own error conditions and include multiple screens in your app.
The SDK comes with a lovely iPhone Simulator. You will need to load up your app and do your own testing. You should try to work out as many bugs as possible and think about all the ways someone might use your app.

This blog post comes at a period when I am considering doing something similar: Quit my first ever job to work on my own project(s). There are some differences though: I am starting from scratch on the projects side (I don’t have any draft presentations, business plans or prototypes for any of my ideas) but not on the developing one (I am a Computer Science graduate and I have already developed a few “things”). I don’t know what I am going to end up doing but thanks for the insight anyway!

On multitasking phones like the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, you can make it so your application doesn’t quit when the user presses the Home button. Instead, the app just goes into the background and reappears just as it was with a tap on its icon. You can give your app multitasking powers without writing a single line of code!
Every day I spend some time programming in Objective-C in order to get better. I have a couple other hobby apps that I work on to expand my skill-set, though I still consider myself a beginner programmer. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help of Chris Brandsma, who patiently helped me through so many Objective-C problems.
Try IOS is a great introduction to programming for iWhatever devices. The course deftly sidesteps the diversion of the Apple development environment, XCode, simulators and NIB files and instead focuses on the structure of IOS applications – the relationship between controllers and views, and for good measure adds some network code and JSON into the mix. I can’t fault the course. It’s to the point, it takes the participant (and we do have to participate) deeper and deeper into the architecture of IOS development, peeling back the layers as we progress. The coding exercises are well explained and re-enforce understanding, without inhibiting progress by making exercises overly burdensome. At all times there is a helping hand with notes, and even hints. This is a faultless approach to teaching programming, encapsulating gentle humour, teaching and participation. Try IOS is the Tina Turner of development courses – simply the best.

The past year and a half has been quite a journey. I’ve gone from starting to learn iPhone design, to quitting my full time job and focusing on an application full-time. All while teaching myself to program in Objective-C with no prior programming experience.

A common approach is to build a free version with ads, and offer a paid version with all ads removed, but Android users have become accustomed to seeing ads and this may not be enough of an incentive on its own.
